WEGO Health Activist Writer's Challenge Month - Day 24
Today's challenge: A mascot. If your health condition had a mascot, what would it be?
The unofficial mascot of the Diabetes Online Community is...
A unicorn!
Or as the amazing Kim Vlasnik of Texting My Pancreas put it...
Unicorns + Glitter +Magic Sprinkles = Diabetes Perfection.
Er wait, um... no.
I'm not a Pollyanna type person. I don't believe that all will be well if I just add a smile. But, I do see the irony of a mythical unicorn as a symbol of perfectly controlled diabetes. Right now my blood sugar is 191 and rising. I don't live a perfect life with diabetes. Anyone who does can munch on this here cookie made of 100% genuine unicorn poo.
Perfection is an illusion. Glitter and sparkles don't fix diabetes, but being a little lighthearted at times can help. I like the Unicorn.
However... I don't just have diabetes, as you all know. I also have Myasthenia Gravis, a disease so weird most doctors will see one patient in their entire career. In medical school doctors are trained with the adage, "Common things are common." This is good advice. If a patient comes in with a fever and cough expect the flu and not ebola.
Put another way they learn, "If you hear hoof beats, think horse."
When myasthenia gravis came thundering into my life doctors heard the hoofbeats and had no idea what was coming was a zebra. MG is not a normal illness. It's not even a horse of a different feather. Nope, it's a zebra. Now that I have diabetes? Well, my mascot looks like...
Yep, this is the official mascot of Myasthenia Gravis and Diabetes.
